greatest songs ever, vol. 2

For your viewing pleasure:

I've been a fan of Goldfrapp since I heard their song "Number 1," from the CD Supernature. That song is incredible, but this one is my all-time favorite from them, and one of my all-time favorites period. This song, "A&E" is from their most recent album, Seventh Tree, which is full of great songs ("Happiness," "Clowns," "Caravan Girl").

To me, the song is about overwhelming yourself with love. It's a cautionary tale, in some ways, about love gone wrong (here's a hint: accident & emergency). It tells the tale of a girl who falls in unrequited love and ends up in the hospital, when all she wanted was some love in return. I love Goldfrapp's way of songwriting, because it's mysterious, it's atmospheric, and it makes references, rather than literally spilling out the details.

More than anything, it's a beautiful song that lifts at the end and swells to surround you. A gorgeous, sad, story woven into a Joni Mitchell-esque melody with some electronica and 60's folk thrown in. I'm so down, and I hope you are too.
