Time and time again, it's clear that when increases in anti-gay rhetoric, which usually flares up when there's a Republican in the White House, or an anti-gay ballot initiative (Prop 8), anti-gay hate crimes increase as well.
Take Santa Clara county in California, for example.
Some people seem to think that it's okay to oppose same-sex marriage and consider themselves accepting or tolerant of gay people. Just think about this, and what affect your anti-gay voice has in bringing out those feelings of hatred in others and the tragedies that often result. You're not just hurting our feelings, you're making others (granted, with a bit less restraint than you) feel like it's okay to physically hurt us, too.
This goes for anything: the consequences of our actions can never be truly captured - they spread much farther than we can even begin to imagine. What more reason do you need to do the right thing?
